When Was The Last Time You Played This Album?

801 “Listen Now”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day (#143 in the Series) is 801, Listen Now

Some times you have to pull one out that I bet no one has listened to in years!  I’m guessing that’s true for 801.

When was the last time you pulled this one off the shelf?  There even a good chance that you never even heard of this one.

801 is a band put together by Phil Manzanera, Phil is best known as lead guitarist for one of my favorite bands, Roxy Music.

Roxy would take time off now and then and like most bands, many members would work on solo projects.  This was Phil’s

It took two years to record. He started in 1975 and finished in 1977. Oddly enough, while working on putting this together, 801 released a live album in 1976 called Listen Live.

Phil recruited a ton of great players for Listen Now.  When I put this together, I was shocked to see that one of my favorite vocalists Tim Finn!  Who knew!!

Here’s a list of some of the others. Brian Eno, Rhett Davies, Mel Collins, Simon Phillips, Eddie Rayner(!!!!), Eddie Jobson, Lol Crème and Kevin Godley.

The two songs that received the most airplay were the first two tracks on the disc.

Listen Now and Flight 19.

IMPORTANT NEWS: We will be upgrading to a complete new site in just a couple days. Maybe sooner.  Please be patient.  Thanks

The idea is, on a ‘hopefully” daily basis, I’ll look thru my old and new CDs and post a listing. The idea being that it may result in some interesting musical discussion. Maybe it will just bring back some memories. Or better yet, turn you onto something that you might have missed the first time.

Please be sure to leave comments. There’s a link at the bottom of each album.

Don’t be fooled by some of the publishing dates on the blog.  It was created on August 6th 2010.  This was started on Facebook as ‘Today’s Cool Album of the Day.’ I have well over 100 entries there.  I wanted to move some of them here but lower down in the que. This is also why something that might have the looks of being published long ago has no addition comments included.

Make sure you go back thru the older entries.  I’m adding more to the back  and middle of the blog on a daily basis.  These are from the ones that have been on the Facebook site previously.

You can also subscribe to the blog.  Every time I add a new entry it will be delivered directly to your mail box.  To subscribe, just visit the box on the right side sidebar.

MAKE SURE YOU SCROLL THRU THE PAGES. There’s a link to view older entries at the bottom of each page.

For those of you on Facebook.  There is a slimmed down version there.  Do a search for Today’s Cool Album of the day. You won’t find the videos and the cool look, but you’ll see an increase in discussions.

Elvis Costello “My Aim Is True”

Today’s Cool Album of the Day is Elvis Costello’s “My Aim Is True.”

The live Elvis’ debut release. I remember when it came out and ‘XRT jumped on it. Great song followed by great song. Little did I know that he’s be putting out great music with unmatched variety to this day.

His backing band on ‘My Aim is True’ was an unheard of band called ‘Clover.’ They went on to become ‘The News’ as in Huey Lewis and….’ They should have suck with Elvis.

Many memorable moments here. “Angel’s Want To Wear My Red Shoes, Mystery Dance, Radio Sweetheart, Alison, Less Than Zero and Watching the Detectives.” It’s hard to find many better debut albums.
